New York Geothermal Tax Credits & Rebates
For a new geothermal project, verify the tax credit, utility incentive and any financing separately. They have different conditions and may affect your budget at different times.

Federal Geothermal Tax Credit & Installation Dates
Checked September 26, 2026: the IRS states that the Residential Clean Energy Credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not include an assumed 30% federal residential credit in a new 2026 installation budget.
The IRS deadline FAQ also explains that paying before the cutoff does not qualify an installation completed afterward. Read the IRS credit page and its installation-timing FAQ. Individual filing and any prior-year carryforward questions belong with your tax adviser.
New York State Geothermal Tax Credit Requirements
New York’s tax agency lists a credit of 25% of qualified expenditures, capped at $10,000 for eligible systems placed in service on or after July 1, 2025. It is nonrefundable, with excess credit potentially carried forward for up to five years.
Conditions include qualifying equipment and residential use; the agency states that the property must not have been rented during the tax year in which the credit is claimed. Review the official geothermal credit page and linked instructions for your circumstances. The maximum is not a promised refund or an automatic reduction in the installer’s invoice.
NYS Clean Heat & National Grid Geothermal Rebates
Use the property’s electric account to identify the applicable program. National Grid’s Upstate New York guidance limits its Clean Heat incentives to electric-service customers and requires a participating contractor. Incentives vary with the project; the payment may be an upfront discount or a later reimbursement.
Have the contractor identify the current program, eligibility conditions, amount, application responsibility and payment timing in writing. A gas account or a Syracuse mailing address alone is not enough. Start with National Grid’s current program guidance or the NYS Clean Heat utility information for another electric provider.
Geothermal Installation Price vs. Incentive Savings
- Contract amount: the work being purchased and when payments are due.
- Confirmed incentive: the documented program amount, conditions and expected payment route.
- Possible tax benefit: the amount your tax circumstances may allow, verified through the applicable instructions.
Do not subtract an unconfirmed item just to make two proposals look comparable. Use the installation quote breakdown first, then ask the program administrator or tax adviser about uncertain treatment.
Geothermal Incentive Documents & Quote Details
Keep the dated proposal, equipment specifications, program confirmation, application responsibilities, completion documentation and invoices. Ask what happens if the installation date, equipment or scope changes. New construction, rentals and ownership arrangements may need different treatment.
This guide is dated source navigation, not a personal eligibility or tax calculation. Recheck the official rules before committing to an incentive-dependent budget.
