Geothermal Electric Bills & Heating Costs
Switching from a fuel-burning heating system to an electric heat pump can move spending from oil, propane or gas to electricity. A higher electric bill alone does not show whether total heating costs rose or fell.
Electric Bills After an Oil or Gas Geothermal Conversion
Keep electric bills and fuel purchases together for the same period. Record any fuel still used by water heating, cooking or another appliance. If geothermal also adds cooling where none existed before, the home is receiving an additional service that changes the comparison.
National Grid describes this fuel-to-electric shift in its heat-pump guidance. That general explanation is not a savings promise for a particular home. Equipment performance, use, weather and rates still matter.
For delivered oil or propane, an invoice records a purchase, not necessarily fuel consumed during those dates. Tank levels, delivery timing and estimated readings can distort a short comparison. Record those limits instead of treating every delivery as that period’s heating use.

Leave missing readings blank and label them missing. Do not turn an unavailable fuel record into zero fuel use. Keep the original bills so estimates and adjustments can be identified.
Weather, Thermostat Settings & Geothermal Energy Use
A colder period or different indoor temperature can change demand even when the equipment is working as intended. A single winter month is a weak basis for a long-term payback claim. If an installer provides a forecast, ask for the weather, rate and usage assumptions behind it.
For a proposed conversion, compare complete scenarios using the same comfort task. For an installed system, organize the observed records before drawing conclusions. These are different exercises.
High Geothermal Bills & Heating Problems
If consumption changes unexpectedly alongside fault messages or loss of comfort, record those observations and seek a system-specific assessment. Bills cannot diagnose a ground loop, compressor or control setting.

Compare Geothermal Heating Costs Fairly
Ask for a clear distinction between modeled operating cost and a guaranteed outcome. Include cooling, hot water and retained backup equipment consistently. Keep financing payments separate from energy use so the comparison answers the question you actually intend.
