Neither document wins this exercise. The unresolved differences explain why comparing only the totals would be premature.
Missing Geothermal Installation Costs
An empty line is not a zero-cost item. Write “not stated” until the bidder clarifies it. An allowance also deserves its own status: it is an amount reserved under stated assumptions, not necessarily the final cost.
Use four simple labels throughout your comparison: included, excluded, allowance and not stated. Add the responsible party and the document section beside each one. That makes later revisions easier to trace.
Geothermal Quote Questions for Your Contractor
A useful follow-up might read: “Your proposal connects to the existing ducts. Please identify any assessment included, the modifications currently allowed for, and how additional changes would be approved and priced.”
This is more specific than asking whether everything is included. It gives the bidder a defined question and leaves an answer you can compare with the other proposal. Keep the reply with the contract version it changes.

Separate equipment coverage, installation labor and retained components. Ask which party provides support and what paperwork you receive at completion. If drilling and HVAC sit under separate contracts, identify who coordinates their connection and tests.
